Blue and White Rope Skippers

On Tuesday 10th October the Blue and White Rope Skippers came to Aviators, Kidlington to perform and coach during the adult training session.  The session began with demonstrations of single rope skipping. The speed and agility of the team was amazing as they turned rope tricks on their own, in pairs and threesomes, with the whole group skipping to finish.

Following this came a Double Dutch demonstration, where two people turn two ropes at the same time for one or more skippers.  Tricks included handstands, press-ups and very fast rope turning.

The rest of the evening was spent learning how to achieve some of the tricks that the skippers had been doing. The skippers were excellent at coaching and everyone had lots of fun practising.  Sensei Jake and Sensei Claire excelled themselves.

The evening finished with everyone doing Double Dutch speed skipping. David Clapton was very impressive as he skipped the fastest and for the longest.  A very enjoyable and successful evening, rounded off with a group photo to remember it all by.

Background

'The Blue & White Rope Skippers is a club established in 1990 to promote the fast growing sport of rope skipping. The club, based in a small Warwickshire village called Studley, currently has 60+ members, male & female, ranging in age from six to sixty+.

It was in 1989 that a group of young athletes from U.S.A.F. Upper Heyford visited Studley Junior School to introduce the art of rope skipping. An interest was shown at that time, by a teacher from the school, Roger Smithies, & the following year, named after the school colours, the club was formed.

The story goes that the sport originated in the U.S. during the 60's when a college football team was ordered to jump rope as part of their keep fit programme when it was too cold to train outside. One of the players got bored with hopping up & down so he started some fancy footwork. The craze soon caught on.'
