Themes

Oxford School of Martial Arts runs its classes around different themes.

During a class,  a proportion of the time  will be set aside to look at Successful Life Skills For Children of the Martial Arts. This is done in a participatory fashion, not a lecture. It involves asking questions and role-playing to keep involvement high.  Each month a different theme is covered. Some of these are listed below.

School Safe/Street Safe - STRANGER ALERT

We will be teaching that a stranger is "anyone you don't know until your Mum or Dad tells you otherwise".  Most strangers are good and have no intention of ever harming anyone. There is a difference between niceness and goodness. Just because someone is nice, it doesn't mean they are a good person.  It is for this reason we have to be careful.

The students will be learning the NO-GO-YELL-TELL method of self-defence

School Safe/Street Safe - THE FIVE RULES OF PERSONAL SAFETY

Step 1 - Use Your Mind - Create Safe Habits

Step 2 - Use Your Words - How to talk to a bully

Each theme is accompanied by a parent handout which you can print out. ( You will need Adobe Acrobat (PDF) to view the handouts.) We encourage you to discuss these themes with your child often. This will, of course, help to solidify these ideas into their memory bank (imprinting) and allow them to more fully utilize these themes into their life.
